Insert Citations

Mendeley has plug-ins for Word, LibreOffice and BibTeX. We cover thousands of citation styles and you can even create your own. Installing the Mendeley plugin for MS Word 2011 for Mac and adding a citation http://rjh.goingeast.ca/wp-content/presentations/MSW/01-MacSettingUpWord.html. Open up Word and click on the main menu in the top left, and then select 'Word Options' towards the bottom of this menu. From here select 'Add-Ins' on the left, and locate the 'Mendeley-0.0.0.dot' entry. The 0.0.0 number will reflect the respective version you have installed. Next to it you will see the directory in which it is located.

Install Mendeley Citation Plugin for Microsoft Word. The main benefit of Mendeley is it can cite the references quickly. So, you don’t need to type references at the end of the paper or thesis manually. Other than that, the software provides a plugin for integration into Microsoft Word. But, the plugin is not automatically installed. Generate citations and bibliographies and change your citation style. Mendeley Cite speeds up the process of referencing when writing, giving researchers the tools to quickly and easily insert references from their Mendeley library directly into their Microsoft Word document. The Mendeley Cite add-in for Word, which can be used without having Mendeley Desktop open or even installed if your library is.

1. Open Word and Insert your cursor where you want your citation to appear.
2. If using a Windows device, Click the 'references' tab and select 'insert citation' in the 'Mendeley Cite-O-Matic' section.

3. If using a Mac and Word 2016, click the Add-Ins tab and slect 'Insert or Edit Citation'. In previous versions of Word for the Mac, the Mendeley add-on is a floating toolbar.

4. Search for the reference you want, select it, and press OK.

Create a bibliography

1. Put your cursor where you want the bibliography to begin
2. If using a Windows device, click the 'references' tab and select 'insert bibliography' in the 'Mendeley Cite-O-Matic' section.
3. If using a Mac, click the 'Add-Ins' tab and select 'insert bibliography'.

1. If using a Windows device, click the 'references' tab and click the down arrow next to the 'style' field in the 'Mendeley Cite-O-Matic' section. If using a Mac device, click the 'Add-Ins' tab and select 'Choose Citation Style'
2. Select the style you want and the references in your document will now reflect your new style.
3. If the style you want is not listed here, select the 'more styles' option at the bottom, and from the 'installed styles' tab, select your style and click 'use this style'.
4. If the style you want is not installed, click the 'get more styles' tab, search for the style you need, select it and click 'install'. The style is now available for you to use in your document.

What is LaTeX?

LaTeX is a typesetting program that takes a plain text file with various commands in it and converts it to a formatted document based on the commands that it has been given. The source file for the document has a file extension of .tex. It is widely used at MIT for theses and other technical papers due to its prowess with mathematical and foreign characters. What is BibTeX?

BibTex is a bibliographic tool that is used with LaTeX to help organize the user's references and create a bibliography. A BibTeX user creates a bibliography file, wth a file extension of .bib, that is separate from the LaTeX source file. Each reference in the bibliography file is formatted with a certain structure and is given a 'key' by which the author can refer to it in the source file.
